FAQs

Application process:

How can I check that I’m eligible to apply?

You need to be eligible to live and entitled to work in the UK and you need to fulfil our nationality requirements. For details on the latter go to http://www.civilservice.gov.uk/about/index.asp

Can I transfer from my current Civil Service department?

If you are successful at interview, and you are already working as a Civil Servant, you may be able to transfer across with a continuous service record.

Can I apply if I have a criminal record?

Prior to appointment, you’ll need to undergo a Criminal Record Check which will reveal unspent convictions. A conviction does not necessarily bar you from employment with us, but a decision will be made by HR on a case-by-case basis depending on the nature of the conviction, and the role you are applying for.

Will I have to declare a driving offence? And if so, will it bar me from employment?

The Criminal Record Check discloses all convictions recorded on central records. Road traffic offences which have been dealt with by means of payment of a fixed penalty and not resulting in conviction, will not be disclosed. A conviction for a road traffic offence does not necessarily bar you from employment with us – see answer to above question.

What is higher level security vetting?

If a job specifies this as a condition of employment, you will be required to undergo detailed checks into your health, lifestyle, and finances before you are cleared to carry out the full range of duties.  Your appointment will be conditional upon successful clearance.

Can you send me an application form by post or do I have to apply online?

Like many organisations we find that online recruitment is efficient and cost effective – we think it makes for a good and consistent candidate experience. If you have a disability which makes online applications difficult for you, then we will accept applications in whichever format is easiest for you. Please phone our contact centre and ask to be put through to HR to discuss your requirements.

Why do I have to register to apply?

By registering, you are able to save and return to your application whenever you like, and also to save your personal details for any future applications. In addition, it helps us to communicate with you throughout the recruitment process via your registered email address.

Will you accept a late application?

No – in the interests of fairness to all candidates, we do not extend deadlines. You’ll need to submit your application by midnight on the closing date.

When will I know if I’ve been selected for interview?

You’ll receive an email with the decision on your registered email address, as soon as the panel are able to meet after the closing date.

Will I get feedback on my application and interview?

Because of large volumes of applications, we cannot offer feedback on your application. But if you are interviewed and not appointed, then we can offer you feedback on your interview performance on request.

What is involved in an assessment centre?

This could include the requirement for a written test, an in-tray exercise, a role-play, a presentation, or a psychometric test. You’ll be given full information and notice if any of these methods form part of the selection process.

What arrangements will you make for disabled applicants and employees?

If you have a disability we will make reasonable adjustments to the application and selection process if needed. Once you join us, we will make any reasonable adjustments that you need in order to do your job effectively.

Can I negotiate my salary?

It is normal practice for us to appoint at the minimum of the scale publicised. In exceptional circumstances, we can negotiate to the top of the recruitment range and this will depend on your experience and the skills you are bringing to the Commission.

Working for the Charity Commission:

Can I work part-time, take on flexible hours or work from home?

We actively and positively consider any such requests, but it will very much depend on business needs and the nature of the post.

Can I transfer my current pension?

If you are in a pension scheme which is analogous to the Principle Civil Service Pension Scheme, then you may be able to – seek further information from the Civil Service Pensions Website (link)

Is there car-parking available?

There is some capacity at our Taunton and Newport sites, but this cannot be guaranteed. Neither London nor Liverpool has car-parking spaces available although arrangements can be made for staff with disabilities.

Do you operate a season ticket/bicycle loan scheme?

See Rewards and Benefits section

Do you have a dress code?

We expect you to dress appropriately for the office (i.e. in a business-like manner which includes “smart casual” clothing) reflecting the fact that we have open plan offices and visitors to Commission offices.
