Type and variety of roles
Like many public sector organisations, there’s a lot more variety on offer here than you might imagine. Many of our people have previously worked in charity jobs or public sector jobs but this is by no means the full extent of the experience we need. To keep the Charity Commission running smoothly we need professionals from a wide range of jobs and backgrounds including: operational leaders and managers, research analysts, lawyers, accountants, policy, intelligence and investigation specialists and call centre advisers to name just a few.

We have four main functions:
Charity Services Directorate provides one-to-one services to a wide range of customers including charities, their trustees and the public. The work ranges from high volume telephone and email queries to in-depth and complex casework, focused on supporting charities to resolve challenging issues or to undertake significant projects. This Directorate also provides a tailored service to both the largest charities (including Common Investment Funds) and charities in Wales.
Types of roles:
- Contact Centre Advisers and Managers.
- Senior Liaison Officers (and Account Managers) for the largest charities.
- Case Officers who provide advice and give legal consents to charities.
- Case Officers who facilitate the registration of charities.
- Operational Managers responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of quality services
- Development Managers responsible for initiating and delivering change in-line with our strategic objectives.
The Policy and Effectiveness Directorate develops the policies and plans that ensure that the Commission is an effective, efficient and modern regulator. The Directorate does this through its specialist policy, planning and research teams who work with Government, sector umbrella bodies and individual charities to develop policies that appropriately reflect the experience of charities and the legal and regulatory framework. The Directorate also includes the Corporate Affairs team who communicate and engage with the sector, the media, parliamentarians and the public to make sure public trust and confidence in charities remains high. Part of our engagement strategy includes a faith and social cohesion team who provide outreach support.
Types of roles:
- Policy Advisers who develop and propose options to determine present and future direction.
- Research Officers who analyse and interpret data and information sources to support policy.
- Performance and Planning Officers who monitor and review the effectiveness of the Commission.
- Parliamentary Officers who develop and maintain relationships with parliamentary stakeholders.
- Press Officers who handle media interest in the Commission’s work and wider sector.
- Outreach Officers who provide advice and support to charities on rights and responsibilities.
Legal and Compliance Directorate our specialist in-house legal team provides formal legal advice to all areas of the Commission, and undertakes our legal cases including those involving the new Charity Tribunal. Our Compliance Directorate proactively identifies and investigates allegations of abuse in charities, taking firm and robust action where allegations of misuse or maladministration are found.
Alongside ensuring charities comply with their legal requirements, our Compliance teams also work with individual charities to help them rectify mistakes and put robust systems in place to ensure problems don’t reoccur.
This Directorate also includes the Commission’s International Programme, which develops policy and delivers training to NGO’s and governments in other parts of the world to support the development of an accountable and independent not-for-profit sector globally.
Types of roles:
- Case Officers who assess complaints and carry out compliance visits to charities.
- Investigators, who run high risk investigations and statutory inquiries into allegations of abuse.
- Specialist Officers dealing with areas such as resolving disputes in charities, fundraising abuse and governance problems.
- Outreach Officers working with the sector to prevent abuse taking place in the first place.
- Legal Advisers providing specialist advice on legal compliance, policy work and running litigation cases.
- Forensic Accountancy professionals.
- International programme managers providing advice and support to NGO regulators worldwide.
- Customer Service Officers, who deal with complaints about the Commission’s work.
Charity Information and Corporate Services Directorate – The Charity Information team ensures that charities are transparent to their beneficiaries, donors, and the wider public. They maintain the Register of Charities and seek to improve the range and accessibility of information available to the public. Charity Information use online technology both to engage with charities and to make public information about charities interesting and accessible.

Officers in the division:
- Support the design, development and use of online and paper processes to obtain accurate and timely information.
- Design and develop online and paper processes.
- Support charities in preparing timely accounts and returns.
- Develop and maintain public information about charities.
The Corporate Services team provide key specialist services which support workforce and workplace transformation and enable the Commission to deliver its key objectives and meet efficiency targets.
Types of roles:
- IT and Procurement specialists.
- HR professionals.
- Diversity and Internal Communications experts.
- Finance professionals.
- Health and Safety experts.
Many Commission jobs call for specific skills sets and/or specialist knowledge. These may have been gained in public sector jobs, charity jobs, compliance jobs (including with other regulators) or the private sector, but they all have something in common. Everyone who works here needs to have a genuine interest in the charity sector, an enquiring mind, a flexible “can do” attitude and a creative approach. Customer care skills are a must too.
